Zinc Alloy (Zamac)
Description
Norkem are a major stockist and distributor of Zinc Alloys. All our alloys are manufactured using Special High Grade Zinc which ensures both a high quality and consistent product.
There are two families of Zinc Alloys; ZA (Zinc-Aluminium) alloys and ZAMAK alloys. ZA alloys were initially developed for gravity casting. Their mechanical properties compete directly with bronze, cast iron and aluminium using sand, permanent mould and plaster mould casting methods. Distinguishing features of the ZA alloys are their high aluminium content and excellent bearing properties.
ZAMAK or ZL alloys are more widely used and is identified by numbers 3, 5, 7, & 2. ZA alloys consist of ZA-8, ZA-12 and ZA- 27.
ZL-3 alloy is usually the first choice when considering zinc for die casting. Its excellent balance of desirable physical and mechanical properties, superb castability and long-term dimensional stability are the reasons why it is the most widely available alloy. ZAMAK No. 3 also offers excellent finishing characteristics for plating, painting and chromate treatments. It is the "standard" by which other zinc alloys are rated in terms of die casting.
Further information on the physical properties and specification of ZL-3 can be found here.
