Norkem joins global SEDEX initiative >

Norkem are proud to announce that we are now a Supplier (B) Member of Sedex.

We made the decision to complete this accreditation in order to offer reassurance to all our customers that we are meeting best practice guidelines for global businesses.

Sedex is an international not-for-profit membership association which provides companies with an online platform to share data and measure compliance. It covers the following business areas:

  • Labour standards
  • Health and safety
  • The environment
  • Business ethics

Ultimately, its goal is to improve the ethics of companies and encourage them to pursue more responsible business practices. It does this by offering greater transparency of social audits. The main focus is on companies who form part of a global supply chain.

The online platform is fully secure and currently contains information on over 36,000 companies, based in more than 150 countries. It is the largest database of its kind in the world. Buyers are able to search the database to find information on current and prospective suppliers and discover the extent to which they are meeting their obligations, both ethical and social. Supplier’s simply have to upload their audit results.

Audits tend to cover the following principles:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • Respect to Freedom of Association
  • Working conditions are safe and hygienic
  • Child labour should not be used
  • Minimum living wages are paid
  • Working hours are not successive
  • No discrimination is practised
  • Regular employment is provided
  • No harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed

As a supplier, we benefit from this accreditation as it reduces the number of audits and certifications we need to complete. We take our corporate social responsibility seriously and Sedex is a brilliant way of letting everybody know.

Rather than provide each individual buyer with copies of our audit, we can simply direct them towards the Sedex page. This avoids unnecessary duplication and so-called ‘audit fatigue’, which can be highly disruptive.

Furthermore, Sedex accreditation acts as an impetus for us to be constantly evaluating our own ethical performance and where we can make improvements. The annual Sedex conference focuses on sharing ideas and discussion about how we can all be making improvements to how we operate.
